Additional Info
American goalie Gabriel Slonina finished a permanent transfer to Chelsea in the month of August 2022.
The 18-year-old agreed upon a six-year contract with the Blues, coming from the MLS team Chicago Fire where he finished the season on loan prior to moving to Chelsea at the beginning of 2023.
Before Chelsea
When Slonina signed a professional contract with Chicago in 2019, at the age of just 14, he made history as the club’s youngest signing. He was regarded as one of his country’s most promising prospects. When he made his MLS debut for the Fire in August 2021 at the young age of 17 years and 81 days, he also set a record for being the youngest goalkeeper ever to start a game.
Besides his historic debut in senior football, he also contributed to the securing of a 0-0 draw against New York City, the first among his 16 clean sheets in the MLS. The young man established himself as an integral member of the Chicago Fire, appearing in every match of their 2022 league season aside from the final two. He appeared for the club a total of 43 times.
Slonina has also played for the USA at various youth levels. In December 2021, he was given his first senior international call-up and was a substitute in the USA’s 1-0 friendly victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
