West Ham United announced the signing of Areola on a season-long loan with a purchase option on July 29 2021. On September 22, he made his debut in the EFL Cup against Manchester United at Old Trafford. He appeared in 11 Europa League games, conceding eight goals and keeping five clean sheets as West Ham advanced to the 2021-22 Europa League semi-finals. He also competed in the FA Cup and League Cup, as well as one Premier League game.
