Casemiro, the Manchester United midfielder, is one of the most renowned and decorated midfielders of his generation, having made his name with the great Real Madrid teams of the 2010s.
Casimiro, Carlos Henrique (full name) is a Brazilian international and the current captain of the Brazilian national team. He has won the Champions League five times.
His football career started in the Sao Paulo youth system in 2002, and he made his professional debut eight years later against Santos.
He made an immediate impression, winning the Copa Sudamericana in 2012, and was loaned to Real Madrid in January 2013. After starting in the B squad, he made his La Liga debut in April of that year, playing the full 3-1 win over Real Betis. In May 2014, he witnessed his team win the Champions League, a feat to which he had contributed six appearances.
Casemiro spent the 2014/15 season on loan to Porto, where he played regularly and gained Champions League experience. When he returned to Madrid, he quickly established himself in the first team.
Zinedine Zidane’s appointment as manager in January 2016 marked a watershed moment for the Brazilian, as he appeared in 11 Champions League games as Real Madrid won their 11th title in the competition, including all 120 minutes of a dramatic penalty shootout victory over rivals Atletico Madrid.
The following season, Real Madrid won the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup, with Casemiro scoring in both finals, against Juventus and Manchester United, respectively. With 25 appearances, he also won the Spanish title for the first time that year. Along with spectacular midfield colleagues Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, he was rapidly increasing in stature.
In 2017/18, he played a key role in Real Madrid’s third straight Champions League victory, a run of domination unrivaled since the competition’s reorganization in 1992.
Another Champions League triumph arrived in 2021/22, courtesy of a historic 1-0 win against Liverpool in Paris, and Casemiro also contributed to his third La Liga championship. Just weeks before joining United, he was named Man of the Match in Real Madrid’s 2-0 UEFA Super Cup victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Aside from his sparkling club successes, Casemiro has long played a key role in the Brazilian national team. He played for the Selecao’s Under-17 and Under-20 teams before making his senior debut against Argentina in a 0-0 draw in 2011.
He was chosen for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia and the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar, and he was part of the team that won the 2019 Copa America by defeating Chile 3-1 in Rio de Janeiro.
