Going back to the beginning, his career began wearing a Boca Juniors jersey in his native Argentina. At the age of 16, Paredes made his first appearance for the first team. He went on to make a total of 30 appearances and score five goals.

He arrived in Italy via Chievo Verona, moved to Roma, spent time on loan at Empoli, and then made his way back to the Giallorossi as an important member of their midfield. Zenit St. Petersburg in Russia called him up, and he spent the next 61 games there, scoring 10 goals and winning the Russian Premier League, the first of 11 championships in his professional career.
