Chelsea signed Marcus Bettinelli in July 2021.
After the departure of Willy Caballero, he ended up having been released from the contract at Fulham to strengthen Chelsea’s goalkeeping resources.
The 6ft 4in goalkeeper spent more than ten years at Craven Cottage, where he made 120 appearances for the Whites. Earlier in his career, he also played for the England Under-21 team.
2021/22
Throughout the season, Thomas Tuchel often employed the goalkeeper as a substitute for Chelsea in cup matches. He also used him in the Premier League in January when Edouard Mendy was away at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Bettinelli made his Blues debut that month, starting all the games, and helped Chelsea advance from the FA Cup third round with a 5-1 victory over Chesterfield at Stamford Bridge. Furthermore, he sat on the sidelines for both competitions of their historic victory at the FIFA Club World Cup in February.
Before Chelsea
At the age of 14, Bettinelli began his professional career at Fulham. He rose through the ranks before making his club debut at the start of the 2014–15 season, after Fulham had been demoted to the Championship.
Before that, he played on loan for Dartford in non-league and Accrington Stanley in League Two, where he gained experience playing senior football as a developing goalkeeper and won the Crown Ground’s Young Player of the Year award.
Bettinelli returned to Cottage in the summer of 2014 after David Stockdale left, and after 45 appearances across all competitions, he became Fulham’s first-choice keeper.
Although the Londoner began the 2015–16 season as the club’s top player, he suffered a knee ligament injury in the third game of the year and missed seven months of action. He made a comeback in March and played in goal for the final nine games of the campaign, but Fulham’s chances of being promoted remained dim as they finished the year in 20th place.
