- Basic Wage
- A player's gross weekly or annual salary before bonuses, image rights, signing-on fees and performance incentives. Retained List wage figures refer to basic weekly wage unless explicitly stated otherwise.
- Bosman Ruling
- The 1995 European Court of Justice judgment that allows out-of-contract players to move between clubs in different EU member states without a transfer fee. Established the modern "free agent" concept in football.
- Pre-Contract
- An agreement signed by a player with a new club before the existing contract expires. Under FIFA rules, players can negotiate a pre-contract with overseas clubs in the final six months of their current deal.
- Free Agent
- A player whose contract has expired, who is not currently registered with any club, and who can sign for any club without a transfer fee. Distinct from a player on a pre-contract but yet to officially join.
- Image Rights
- The commercial value of a player's name, likeness and personal branding. Often paid into a separate company structure for tax efficiency and excluded from headline wage figures.

- Median Wage
