In September 2020, Jan Paul van Hecke signed a three-year contract with Albion and transferred from NAC Breda.
The centre back was quickly loaned to Heerenveen where he played in 28 games in 2020–21.
The following season, Jan Paul played for Blackburn Rovers on loan and got his first experience of English football.
He was instrumental in their impressive eighth-place finish and made history by becoming their first loan player to be awarded Player of the Season.
His country took notice of his performance at the club level because in June 2022, he made his Netherlands Under-21 debut.
