Lonergan began his career at Preston, where he played 231 games after graduating from the Deepdale club’s junior system and making his first-team debut in September 2000 at the age of 16.

Following the quadriceps injury to teenage keeper Harry Tyrer, the former Preston North End goalkeeper came on as a free agent to back up Jordan Pickford and Asmir Begovic.

He joined Everton in August 2021. Lonergan agreed to a new one-year contract extension with the club on July 11, 2022. Lonergan agreed to stay at Everton for another season at the end of the 2023 season.
